Police nab illegal racers in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: In a scene right out of a Hollywood action thriller, police rounded up motorcyclists planning to race illegaly and spectators near a highway in Johor Bahru in Malaysia, as a helicopter hovered above panning a powerful searchlight.

The mammoth operation late last night, involving 140 policemen, caused near pandemonium as the 600 who had gathered at the access road to the Second Link bridge at Gelang Patah tried to escape, a media report said here.

However, they were rounded up as police motorcycles and patrol cars blocked the 10 exits around the area. Among those gathered at the venue were local youths and Singaporeans, it said.

At the end of the operation around 5 am, they were taken to the Johor Baru North police station. Police said 34 people were detained for "illegal racing", including two civil servants and two students.

More than 400 cars and 150 motorcycles, including some with Singapore registration plates, were impounded, the 'New Straits Times' said today.

The weekly races offered winners lucrative cash prizes and the promise of "sexual favours" from young women, the paper claimed.
