Cars The Movie
Doc Hudson:
* Doc's license plate reads 51HHMD, which was the license plate of the real Fabulous Hudson Hornet. It could also be taken to mean "1951 Hudson Hornet, MD", which is probably why he was made a doctor in the film.
* The choice of Doc's unusual build was a dedication to the Fabulous Hudson Hornet racing team, which won three very unexpected NASCAR championships in the 1950s and held 27 season wins in 1952.
* All three of Doc's Piston Cups read "Hudson Hornet." This is apparently his name as well as his make.
* The sign above Doc's clinic reads "Doctor of Internal Combustion"
Lightning Mcqueen
* Lightning McQueen's primary sponser is Rust-eze Medicated Bumper Ointment, and Lightning himself advertises the Rear End Formula.
* Lightning's number was originally going to be 57, to represent the year that John Lasseter was born, but was changed to 95, to represent the year Toy Story came out. In the final film, there is a 57 car who bears a striking resemblance to McQueen, and is probably an older model of the character that Pixar used. This car wins the race in the first teaser trailer (some are led to believe that this car is McQueen, but he is also seen in the trailer in his final form).
* The name McQueen was a reference to Glenn McQueen, a Pixar animator who died in 2002, and some believe that it is also a reference to famous actor and car buff Steve McQueen.
* Lightning's Piston Cup is dated 2006, won in his second season. This would place the events of the film at the end of the 2005 season.
* Sally calls Lightning "Stickers," a teasing reference to the stickers he wears that mimic headlights. This later becomes a sort of pet nickname.
* In the die cast Cars toy line they came out with three different Lightnings: Ligtning McQueen: race version, Donoco McQueen: Dinoco blue version and Radiator Springs McQueen: The end paint job.
Sally Carrera
* Sally's last name (Carrera) comes from her car type.
* Sally's model is a 2002 Porsche 911.
* The Porsche 911 Carrera has a tailfin that normally only rises at highway speeds, but at one point in the movie, she purposefully lifts her tailfin to show off a pinstriping tattoo beneath, which Lightning makes a point of pointing out.
Mater
* Before he got rusted, his color was baby blue. He also lost his hood sometime in the middle of his rusting (which he does find during the end photo-montage, but he then sneezes which causes his hood to fall back into the chasm again (the hood caused his engine compartment to get stuffy)).
* An upcoming Pixar short film called Mater and the Ghost Light features Mater. He refers to the ghost light twice in the film. (am looking out for this!)
